An angry hissing awoke Jason before dawn.

He turned on his side to see Medea crouching over the bodies of the Cynocephali, palms over them, fingers splayed wide. He looked around him to see who else was awake. Orpheus was sat with knees drawn up against the chill, as unreadable as ever. Nearby, Oileus also stirred.

‘Aoroi! Biaithanatoi! Agamoi! Ataphoi!’

Medea’s icy whisper induced an involuntary shudder along Jason’s spine. He glanced at Oileus but the bodyguard’s eyes were fixed upon her.

‘Aoroi! Biaithanatoi! Agamoi! Ataphoi! By death premature, violent, unmarried, dead and unburied!’

She repeated this over each corpse, ensuring the worst possible punishment for the hubris of the initiates: restless souls doomed to wander the face of the earth for all time. By the time she had finished, all of the Argonauts were awake. Then she curled up her lips and hissed at the corpses between gritted teeth. She ignored the Argonauts as they exchanged glances, and took herself to the riverbank to wash.
